ABOUT EXHIBITION

The legend of an extraordinary bearded saint, whose cult in Christian Europe spread in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, became the inspiration for the newest realization of Iwona Demko. Though most likely it is a legendary figure, and the appearance of her images is associated with a misinterpretation of early medieval representations of Christ. The range of influence and social acceptance of her sanctity surprises for over 500 years. The brave Virgin became the patron of the girls who married and the wives persecuted by their husbands. Young boys also prayed for her in order to find the girl’s heart.
However, the legend is just an excuse to create the image of a crucified woman, alibi for us recipients, so that we would not feel the blasphemous cheek of the artist aimed at us.
At this point, it is difficult to agree with the optimistic conclusion of Dorota Jarecka in January’s election campaign that “the cold war of [Polish] society with art” has been won in the last decade. In fact, only a small group of artists and critics are free from internal, traditional censorship, “parochialism” in contact with art referring to religion.
The concept of depicting a crucified woman and the problem of patriarchal world order associated with it has been accompanied by Demko for a long time. The design of the Brave Virgin crystallized with a growing awareness of the emerging lack of gender equality and the painful experience of this condition. The work was created from the artist’s personal needs, her own thoughts and searches. Against anyone, without supporting anyone, for Iwona Demko.
